Want to see how far we have gone?  Download this Google Earth kml file and open in GE –Alaska Ride We smoked all night long, or at least it felt that way from the smoking room that we had, and woke up to a sprinkling morning that was chilly.  We topped off our tanks and headed out west on the Alaskan Highway (1) and after about 20 minutes the sprinkels stopped and it was slowely clearing.

At one of our gas stops, it was 7 degress celces, or about 42 degrees, although we were dressed for it and with those hippo hands, no problem keeping the hands warm.  Like Big Steve would say, it is like sticking your hand in an oven… As we approached Haines Jct, you could see the mountain range start to rise up but the peaks were still covered under the clouds.  As the day progressed, it slowely started to clear and reaveal the beauty of the area.

At Haines Jct we stopped for some coffee and smoke salmon at a great bakery just off the beaten path.  I was able to Skype my sister with my iPhone there must to my amazement.

We left Haines Jct following the Kluane National Park Perserve off to our left. rs_04_leavinghaines

But we had to leave beacause the mesquitoes we started to bother Steve ….rs_mesquitoe   We still skirted a few storms along the way to the Border.

Finally we enter into Alaska again, and the scenery continues.

Alaska!

Alaska!

At one of our construction flag man stops, we found out that Alaska was a Freedom of Choice state!

Free at last!

So Steve and I rode the rest of the way into Fairbanks the way we choose to ride…  Wechecked in, cleaned up, got something to eat – and it was still light out at 10:30.  I mean light out like it was 6:00 p.m.at home. But we were tired so we called it a day…

InFu**ingCredible!!! It just keeps getting better & better!! Totally AWESOME! And the GE file – WOW! Puts your trip into perspective to see the entire route – and you're not even there yet! Top of the World is right! You've practically ridden the whole continent – next time start in Mexico 🙂 All that in a week, too….WOW.

The pics are fabulous – if they're breathtaking on this tiny screen, I can only imagine the majesty you're viewing. Too bad you didn't grab that Tatogga trap yesterday, Steve wouldn't have to share his sandwich.

I'll keep an eye on you today – you farted around so long in Fairbanks yesterday, I missed my fix, but looks like you explored Denali. I'm sure you needed the break. And how awful to be 'stuck' in the middle of nowhere – broke your hearts to ride around the park, I'm sure! Looking forward to more…pics…posts…comments.

I probably will never take a trip like yours so I am living and loving what I am seeing. I almost feel like I am there with you. The mosquitoes are big enough to eat if they don't eat you first. I will be watching with eagerness as you go further.

My disability includes not being able to use the computer's endless option's, so i am amazed what you have done with this sight, I have to go along with your other friends, i will never make this trip so it is most generous of you to include me on your trip! The sights are awesome and i love reading your picture captions. Steve, the bug is big, but even your know you should go big or go home! Have a good ride today

    • big steve says:

For motorcyclist, Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay is one of the great "end of road" adventure rides. Very few riders have attempted this ride and fewer have completed it.

Here's a website that explains the Dalton Hwy and what JimmyV and Big Steve will experience. You will have to copy and paste into your browser.

thanks Dean you have been a great help and mentor on this trip we glad to have you along.

  • JVKRI says:

Thanks Dean for the Dalton Highway link. Too bad SPOT doesn't connect to this website so we could continue our morning Alaskan fixes. We will sorely miss you guys when you're on the next leg of this trip of a lifetime. And to see the picture of where you were when I got to talk to you on Skype! It's almost unbelievable. The pictures are so spectacular – gorgeous scenery, not a soul in sight – the very essence of tranquility. This ride must be a Zen experience for sure. Keep SAFE.

    • JimmyV says:

You’ll still be able to track us on spot – it will be tracking, I just won’t be posting for the next 3 or 4 days. We will have the spot on, so just use the same link

Don't know if I will catch you before you reach the top of the world but I hope your trip up there is safe. We are watching rain here at mom's and keeping her company during the storm. We are all with Kreegy as far as sharing your travels. What an opportuninty. The pictures have been great. Mom was very excited to get the phone call yesterday from you and hearing your voice. She has been enjoying the trip with us and seeing the pictures. Oh about those mosquitoes….do the traps really work???? We will continue to keep on eyes here for any updates on your progress.
